Creating listening & video materials for KS4 & 5
Domo animation is the best. But here's one created on Dvolver. Check out Xtranormal as well.
I've just discovered 2 sites where you can upload your photo and the site 'photoshops' it, inserting it into scenes of your choice. Try using it in the classroom - take pix of the pupils and upload them to the site. They can select their scene.
The sites are
Fun Photobox http://funphotobox.com/
and Funny pho.to http://funny.pho.to/
Following a workshop for Herts head of MFL on Friday 10th December 2010, I've put many of the ideas on this blog + mflteaching part 2 2 into the sldeshare presentation below. I've added Jigsaw Planet to the slidecast.
I've also discovered a Collage-maker 'Shape Collage' which is a free download. It's also worth looking at Nottingham High School mfl whose pupils are doing some good stuff with an animation creator called Domo nation and a storybook creator called Storybird.
Jing is a screencasting tool. In other words you can record what's happening on your computer screen, add audio and broadcast it to your audience (or the world). Camtasia is also worth a look but is more expensive and complex.
In class you could use Jing to explain a text - here's a basic example. You could also use Jing to mark a piece of work which has been submitted as a word document. You can add an audio commentary as you go along and e-mail the finished movie back to the student (be careful though - movie files are big)
I can't believe it's taken me so long to get round to discovering QR codes. It's a way of jumping from print to online material using a smartphone as a scanner.
How to use QR codes:
If you have a Smartphone (i-phone or similar, with access to the internet):
download a QR reader app - many are free e.g. Tapreader for i-phone
When you see a QR code on a display, open the app on your phone, the camera should open, hold it against the code and the app will scan it and open the website link that it's pointing to.
You can also create QR barcodes: download a QR code generator e.g.this one from Zxing:
http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/
copy the website URL and paste it into the QR generator. You can copy or print the generated icon
Using QR codes in the classroom
Animoto - upload a set of photos and Animoto will create a pop style video. Works well with Powerpoint slides - if you convert the slides to JPEGS using File/ save As ... Pictures. Free for up to 30 secs. It's worth paying the 30$ for the full version. Animoto is here
Photostory 3 for Windows A quick, free reliable package that converts a set of photos into a tasteful slideshow.Free Download. Put the photos you want to use in a folder, select the photos, add music and Photostory does the rest. You can also add your own commentary. Photostory is here
Fotobabble Just sign up (free) and sign in. Upload a photo and record your commentary. It's good as a non-writing task for pupils or as a language listening and speaking activity. Fotobabble is here. And here's a sample:
Wordle
If you haven't discovered Wordle yet, you've been on another planet. Just type in some words, or paste in some text. Wordle creates a 'word cloud'. Pupils can use this to spot and practise key words; they could build sentences or work on definitions. They could look at the Wordle for 1 minute then write down as many words as they can remember. Or see how many they can translate in 1 minute. Wordle is here.
for more resources see below and also page 2
also worth looking at: showbeyond.com (slidecasting)
Jing (screen recorder or 'screencast')
Plug and play.
Works just like a memory stick.
You will find your movie files as follows:
Option 1 using Flipshare software:
With the camera plugged into the USB for the first time , it may prompt you to install Flipcam software which is called Flipshare. It’s worth doing this. Once it is installed you can always access your movies through the Flipshare software
You can save the movie directly to the computer: click on the movie you want and choose Export to…
Option 2: direct access to the movies folder on the camera
Click on Flip video then DCIM folder then 100video
Your video can be identified by date and time (if the correct date and time are set in the camera)
Triptico is fantastic for IWB resources and learning 'widgets'
check out Triptico word magnets (this resource is being phased out in favour of a better paid-for version). Wait for the old site to load after the message about the new one. Screenshot here:
also Triptico draft it Here's an idea for using this resource:
Pupil 1 writes a sentence & clicks Save; Pupil 2 writes it again, correcting it or extending it, clicks Save; Pupil 3 writes it again, corrects or expands then clicks Save. You can then review this with the class
